US Approves $2.7 Billion Arms Sale to Ukraine

The US Department of State has approved a potential deal to sell $2.68 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine to modernize its air defense systems. The department announced this overnight on September 19.

According to the State Department's statement, if an agreement is reached between Kyiv and Washington, the costs will be covered by contributions from European countries and funds allocated by the Joe Biden administration under the US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program.

Ukraine has requested ammunition and modernization services for air defense systems from the US.

The list includes S-300 Clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, laser-guided and longer-range air defense missile systems, and other weaponry.

Kyiv has also requested RPS 202 radar stations to counter unmanned aerial vehicles.

The US Department of State specifically emphasized that implementing the deal would not require sending US government representatives or contractors to Ukraine.

"The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region," the department's statement said.
