US aid to Uzbekistan drops 4.3-fold after USAID closure
Ten donor countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reduced foreign aid by 23.1%, or $49 billion, in 2025, with the United States recording the steepest cuts, according to data from Our World in Data.
Together, the donors’ contribution to international development goals declined to $163 billion from $212 billion in 2024. Aid as a share of their gross national income (GNI) fell from 0.37% to 0.25%. Eight of the 10 donors provided less. Only Sweden and Italy went against the trend.
The United States made the biggest cut both in dollar terms and as a share of GNI. Its aid dropped from 0.23% to 0.1% of GNI, while the amount fell 2.3-fold, from $65.3 billion in 2024 to $28.3 billion in 2025.
Aid to Central Asia also decreased. Total U.S. foreign aid to Central Asian countries in 2025 was nearly three times lower than in 2024, at $94.1 million compared with $272 million.
Uzbekistan received $19.9 million directly from the United States last year, 4.3 times less than in 2024. The main reason was the closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Uzbekistan received about $2.6 billion in foreign aid in 2024, 2.1 times less than in 2023. Even so, that was still the largest amount among Central Asian countries.
