Two Britons among three killed in Swiss Alps light aircraft crash
Authorities say the plane took off from the Rhône Valley and collided with a mountain slope about 10 minutes later.
Two Britons are among three people who died in a plane crash in the Swiss Alps.
The light aircraft went down high in the mountains near the town of Leukerbad in the southern canton of Valais on Tuesday.
Authorities said the Cirrus SR22T had departed from Sion airport in the Rhône Valley and, for reasons that are not yet known, struck a mountain slope around 10 minutes later.
Witnesses said they saw flames and smoke.
Emergency crews from the Valais Rescue Organisation, police and firefighters were dispatched to the site, together with three helicopters.
The Swiss Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation.
Valais Police and the Office of the Attorney General have also launched an inquiry.
Formal identification of the victims is still under way.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it was "providing support to the families of two British nationals who died in Switzerland".
It said officials were in contact with local authorities.
"Our thoughts remain with the families during this difficult time," it added.
