Trump wants to stop aid to Israel, while bomb threats hit European airports — daily digest
The results of the US midterm congressional elections held on November 3 have been announced. Democrats will gain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
According to AP calculations, the Senate has already passed to Democratic control. Democrats hold at least 54 of the 100 seats in the US Senate. Democrats took seven seats from Republicans, thus causing President Trump's party to lose its majority status in the Senate. Even in conservative Texas, a Democratic senator and a Democratic governor were elected for the first time in nearly 40 years.
At the same time, in the 435-seat House of Representatives, Democrats hold 225 seats, exceeding the 218 seats required for a majority. Republicans won in 137 districts.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, wrote "A victory for America!" after the results. He is expected to become Speaker of the House in January. US President Donald Trump said he was fully prepared to accept the election results.
The election results are seen as a blow to Trump and the Republicans against the backdrop of dissatisfaction with the economic situation and the war with Iran. Control of the House of Representatives will give Democrats investigative and subpoena powers during the final two years of Trump's presidency.
A series of bomb threats were reported at European airports in a single day. According to Reuters, bomb threats were reported on at least seven aircraft and one cruise ship on November 3. As a result of inspections, no explosive devices were found anywhere, but operations at the airports were disrupted.
The threats targeted two flights each to Warsaw, Sofia, and Rome, as well as one flight to the Spanish city of Murcia. A LOT aircraft flying from London to Warsaw was diverted to nearby Modlin Airport, and the airport was temporarily closed. One of the Ryanair aircraft flying to Rome was escorted by the Italian Air Force. The previous day, a Wizz Air plane flying from London to Sofia was also landed in Budapest due to a similar threat.
Additionally, the cruise ship "Crown Iris" bound for Israel was inspected on the Greek island of Syros. An unknown person had claimed that an explosive device was installed on the ship's hull. Nothing was found during the initial inspection.
