US President Donald Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to stop providing any assistance to Iran during his visit to Washington.
China's economic, intelligence, and military support for Iran is undermining Trump's efforts to isolate the country during the war. The US continues its large-scale economic pressure campaign against Iran, but without cooperation from China, its effectiveness remains only partial.
### China's Assistance to Iran and US Concerns
Since the war began on February 28, Washington has been concerned that China is supplying Iran with air defense systems and spare parts for drone production. Officials say that in recent weeks, Iran has used high-resolution imagery obtained from Chinese commercial satellites. Through this, the country has managed to target American bases in the Middle East, as well as aircraft carriers and warships in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.
This situation has forced the US military to alter its operational procedures to make it harder for Iran to detect and target warships.
"We made it very clear to them weeks ago that any assistance to Iran — whether direct or indirect, whether intelligence, spare parts, or military equipment — is absolutely unacceptable. President Donald Trump firmly reiterated this yesterday," David Perdue said in an interview with CNBC.
He stated that Washington informed China that the Iran issue is a separate matter completely unrelated to Taiwan.
"They listened to us. They stopped certain things. We are confident that when President Trump speaks about Iran, they pay attention," Perdue added.
### China and Qatar's Position
According to Chinese state media, Xi Jinping urged Trump to ease tensions with Iran by returning to the June memorandum of understanding and reaching a nuclear deal.
"China urges the parties to remain committed to a peaceful resolution and to maintain the momentum of negotiations," the Chinese President told Trump.
The meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping took place a day after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held new talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. According to sources, Qatari officials also participated in the talks, relaying messages between the two sides.
It is noted that Araghchi conveyed Iran's conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks to Witkoff and Kushner. Iran proposed to open the strait and resume nuclear talks within a week if the US-imposed naval blockade is lifted, sanctions on oil trade are removed, and the regional ceasefire plan is restored.
### Trump's Response Awaited
A source familiar with the mediation process said that Qatar and Iran are waiting for Trump's response to Tehran's proposal.
"It is still too early to know which direction we are heading, but there are some positive movements," the source said.
However, according to Bild and Al Jazeera, Trump rejected Iran's seven-day ceasefire proposal. Specifically, Washington informed Tehran that the embargo would not be lifted, including the removal of the naval blockade.
