Tomahawk is being delayed: Germany is looking for other missile suppliers

Germany is considering purchasing thousands of high-precision long-range strike missiles to strengthen its capabilities to deter Russia. According to Bloomberg, Berlin is conducting negotiations with manufacturers in the US, the Netherlands, and other countries. The issue of joint production with Ukraine is also being discussed.

Tomahawk delayed: Germany searches for alternative missile suppliers

The Bloomberg agency reported on October 23, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the German Ministry of Defense is negotiating the purchase of several thousand ground-launched Anthem missiles from the US company Covenant. The potential deal could be worth over one billion euros.

Covenant plans to begin manufacturing components for Anthem missiles in Leipzig, Germany, starting in 2027. The company aims to produce one thousand missiles in the first year and subsequently increase production volume to five thousand.

Among other potential suppliers being considered by Berlin is the Dutch company Destinus SA, which produces Ruta cruise missiles. Meanwhile, Germany and the British company Hypersonica are working on creating the HS1 hypersonic missile.

According to the agency's sources, consultations are also being held regarding the joint production and procurement of "Bars" cruise missiles with Ukraine. Bloomberg noted that information about the manufacturer of these missiles was not provided.

The search for alternatives comes amid potential delays in plans to acquire Tomahawk missiles and their ground-based Typhon launchers from the US. According to the agency, the delivery delay could stretch up to five years.

The report notes that the German armed forces' existing weapons in this category primarily consist of air-launched TAURUS cruise missiles with a range of approximately 500 kilometers.

For now, these remain potential purchases and negotiations. The data provided by Bloomberg does not indicate that final contracts have been signed.
