Thousands helped with back to school costs

More than £310,000 has been given to help families with back to school costs, the government says.

The government has announced that over 2,500 students have received assistance through its recent initiative, distributing more than £310,000 to help families with back-to-school expenses.

The "Back to School Bonus" program provided a one-time payment of up to £150. This aid was intended to cover uniforms, stationery, and other vital supplies for children from reception through Year 11, and was available to families with an annual income below £75,000.

According to the Social Security department, 2,552 payments have been approved. These payments supported 1,450 primary school students and 1,102 secondary school students in preparation for the new academic term.

This bonus scheme coincides with the introduction of a new school uniform policy. This policy aims to reduce costs for parents by restricting States schools to a maximum of five branded uniform items per child.

The department also noted that approximately 70 additional applications are currently under review, with the final round of payments scheduled to be processed before the end of August.
