Ten years have passed since the death of the first president of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Islam Abduganievich Karimov. The circumstances of his death, as well as the exact date, remain undisclosed, and our generation will likely never know them. I was personally informed of this on the evening of August 26, 2016. However, recognizing the significance of the event, I decided to wait for official confirmation.

Recently, public mentions of the first president have been limited to two dates a year: his birthday and the day of his death. This is the natural course of events. Any politician at the highest echelons of power must be prepared for the fact that after his passing, his name will be remembered only sporadically. This has been the case, is the case, and will always be the case, at least in countries like ours. Former leaders are usually quickly forgotten. Such is human nature. Exceptions do happen when there is someone to compare them to.

Our publication has repeatedly addressed the personality of the first president. Controversial, controversial. But we have always strived for honesty, impartiality, and maximum objectivity whenever possible. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and politicians are no exception. Balanced texts were explained by one obvious circumstance: the first president of Uzbekistan commanded respect both from the author and from the majority of the country's population. Such things are no longer made.

In my opinion, the most successful piece characterizing Islam Abduganievich's personality was "Single Father," first published five years before his death.

Today, ten years after the passing of Uzbekistan's national leader, we have decided to limit ourselves to photographs taken by Farhad Kurbanbayev, who effectively created a photo chronicle of the most memorable moments in Islam Karimov's life.
