The US is heading to Jizzakh
During the Uzbek delegation's participation in the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), radiation and nuclear safety regulatory authorities of Uzbekistan and the US signed a memorandum of understanding. According to the Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety of Uzbekistan, the document envisages expanding cooperation in a wide range of areas — from licensing and inspections to nuclear accident readiness and professional development of specialists.
On behalf of Uzbekistan, the memorandum was signed by the Chairman of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety, A. Rafikov, and on behalf of the US, by the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, C.H. Nieh.
According to the document, the parties intend to develop cooperation in the field of ensuring radiation and nuclear safety, licensing, and conducting inspections of relevant activities. In addition, it provides for the exchange of experience in improving the regulatory framework, preparing for potential emergency situations, and developing response measures.
Within the framework of cooperation, it is also planned to upgrade the qualifications of industry specialists and expand the exchange of information and practical experience between the regulatory authorities of the two countries.
According to the committee, the memorandum will contribute to the development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the US in ensuring safety in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
A completely logical question arises: will the reached Uzbek-American agreement affect the project for Russia's construction of a nuclear power plant in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan, given the "specific nature" of information regarding modern Russian nuclear technologies?
