The ranking of the most powerful armies for 2026 has been published. India retained fourth place, while South Korea took fifth position. France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Italy were also included in the top ten.
The top 10 most powerful armies according to Global Firepower and their PowerIndex score:
In this system, the lower the index, the higher a country's military potential is rated. Theoretically, a score of zero would be the best result, but the authors of the project note that this cannot be achieved with the current formula.
The assessment takes into account the number of military personnel, weaponry and equipment, financial capabilities, logistics, natural resources, and geographical conditions. Additional coefficients make it possible to compare small but technologically advanced countries with larger ones.
Internet coverage of the population was also added to the calculation for 2026. Data on aviation, land and naval equipment, budgets, ports, airfields, railways, and highways are aggregated into a single index. It assesses a country's capability to wage war on land, at sea, and in the air using conventional weapons.
According to the Global Firepower database, the US leads in total aircraft numbers: 13,032 planes and helicopters performing various tasks are recorded in the country. It is indicated that there are 11 aircraft carriers in the American fleet.
For Russia, 4,237 aircraft and 5,630 tanks are listed. According to the project's calculations, the country ranks first in this category with 3,603 self-propelled artillery systems.
However, the total number of equipment fleets does not mean that all of it is ready for combat missions at the same time. In the project, the total fleet and the equipment assessed as ready for operational use are indicated separately. In cases where reliable data is lacking, estimated calculations are used.
