The film "Odyssey," directed by Christopher Nolan, has become the highest-grossing film in the history of Universal Pictures.

"Odyssey" — about Christopher Nolan's most important film

The film company, founded 114 years ago, announced this news on Saturday, September 12. At that time, the film's US earnings were said to have reached $601.2 million, and $1.083 billion worldwide. Thus, the film's global box office reached a record $1.68 billion.

"The work created by Chris [Nolan] and Emma [Thomas] will go down in history as one of the most magnificent and flawlessly crafted films in cinematic history. This is a phenomenon that will inspire an entire generation of moviegoers," commented Donna Langley, Chairman of the Board of Directors of NBCUniversal Entertainment.

"Odyssey" recently took first place at the box office again in its eighth week of release. The project also became the most successful film of Nolan's career, surpassing his "The Dark Knight Rises" — the first comic book adaptation to gross $1 billion.

In addition, "Odyssey" became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, as well as the highest-grossing film in IMAX format.

"Odyssey" was released worldwide on July 17. Based on Homer's epic, the film tells the story of Odysseus's return home after the Trojan War.

The film stars Matt Damon (Odysseus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope, Odysseus's wife), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Robert Pattinson (Antinous), Elliot Page (Sinon), Lupita Nyong'o (Helen of Troy), Zendaya (goddess Athena), Charlize Theron (nymph Calypso), Benny Safdie (Agamemnon), and Mia Goth (Melantho).
