The number of imprisoned individuals in Uzbekistan increased by 22 percent in six months

In the first half of 2026, the number of individuals deprived of liberty in Uzbekistan increased by 2,133 people, or 22 percent, compared to the corresponding period of 2025.

According to the analysis, 11,703 people were sentenced to deprivation of liberty by courts in the republic between January and June. For comparison, this figure was 9,570 during the same period in 2025.

In the first six months of this year, the highest share of those sentenced to deprivation of liberty was recorded in the city of Tashkent — 2,030 people. The next positions were occupied by Fergana (1,462) and Tashkent (1,452) regions. The lowest share belonged to Karakalpakstan, amounting to 317 people.

Two individuals from the city of Tashkent were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Among those convicted, 179 people committed intentional homicide, and 1,376 people committed crimes of intentionally inflicting grievous and moderate bodily harm. Another 1,789 individuals committed hooliganism, and 5,788 people committed drug-related crimes.

During the half-year, nearly 3,605 people were convicted of committing corruption crimes. Of these, 779 were sentenced to deprivation of liberty. Another 614 were fined, while 1,479 were sentenced to correctional labor, and 711 were sentenced to restriction of liberty.
