The NASA crew preparing for a flight to Mars has emerged from 378 days of isolation

Four astronauts preparing for a NASA Mars mission have emerged from isolation. This process, considered a preparation stage for the flight, lasted 378 days. During this time, the astronauts lived in a specially prepared 158-square-meter 3D-printed module located at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center near Houston.

The NASA crew preparing for a flight to Mars has emerged from 378 days of isolation.

The crew consisted of mission commander Kelly Haston, science officer Nathan Jones, medical officer Anca Selariu, and flight engineer Ross Brockwell.

The astronauts had been in isolation since October 19, 2025. During this period, they communicated with NASA representatives under conditions simulating the communication delays experienced during a flight to Mars. According to Reuters, the astronauts also maintained the operational status of their module and performed tasks simulating activities on Mars. For example, they cultivated agricultural crops in soil similar to the Martian regolith.

The astronauts now face a two-week period with NASA scientists to evaluate the mission results. One of their goals is to understand how astronauts can better adapt to long-duration spaceflight, its daily routine, and the tasks to be performed. This was the second such test — another crew also spent 378 days in isolation in 2023–2024.

NASA is planning to organize a crewed mission to Mars. Exact dates have not been set, but the agency noted that the flight could take place in the 2030s.
