**Modern Silk Road: Israel and Uzbekistan Collaborate in Sericulture**
Professor Ulyana Shimanovich of the Weizmann Institute of Science recently completed a 21-day scientific and industrial tour of Uzbekistan. The visit, organized with the support of the Embassy of Israel in Uzbekistan and the Light Industry Agency of Uzbekistan, was aimed at establishing academic and industrial cooperation. The goal of the trip was to explore opportunities to integrate Israeli innovations in sericulture and advanced biomaterials with Uzbekistan's extensive experience and infrastructure in silk and textile production.
Located at the center of the historic Silk Road, Uzbekistan is an ideal platform for such collaboration. The country maintains a well-developed ecosystem encompassing all stages of sericulture: from silkworm breeding and cocoon production to silk processing, textile manufacturing, research, engineering, and traditional crafts.
Professor Shimanovich's journey began in Samarkand, one of the key points on the ancient Silk Road, and continued through Bukhara, Tashkent, the Fergana Valley, and Margilan.
**Cyclic Silk Production in Bukhara**
The first significant stop was Bukhara, a historical center of trade and textile production. At the Bukhara Silk Factory, Professor Shimanovich was introduced to a vertically integrated production system encompassing virtually the entire silk cycle: from silkworm rearing and cocoon production to degreasing, unwinding of continuous silk fibers, yarn preparation, and textile production.
She was particularly impressed by the company's approach to waste minimization. Short and discontinuous silk fibers, unsuitable for conventional yarn, are processed into hypoallergenic pillow fillings. Silkworm pupae are used to extract oil, including for potential pharmaceutical applications. This demonstrates how traditional sericulture can be integrated with modern concepts of circular and sustainable production.
**Connecting Science and Industry in Tashkent**
In Tashkent, the focus was on research, technology, and opportunities for bilateral cooperation. At the Institute of Textile Industry (name to be confirmed), Professor Shimanovich learned about programs to develop improved silkworm strains capable of producing larger cocoons and increased silk yields, as well as improving characteristics important for rearing and feeding.
Discussions at the Agency for Light Industry of Uzbekistan focused on opportunities for academic and industrial cooperation between Israel and Uzbekistan. Specifically, the potential for combining Uzbekistan's existing capabilities in the textile industry with Israel's advances in materials science, biotechnology, and silk-based technologies was explored.
At the Uzbekistan-Korean Textile Technology Park, Professor Shimanovich gained an understanding of modern textile quality control technologies, including the assessment of color fastness, resistance to friction and wear, and thermal stability. Such infrastructure could be particularly useful for translating new silk-based materials from laboratory research to industrial application.
**New Academic and Scientific Opportunities in Fergana**
The trip continued to the Fergana Valley, one of the largest historical centers of sericulture and textile crafts in Central Asia. Potential academic collaborations, including joint research and student exchange and training programs, were discussed at Fergana State University.
During the visit, the potential of silk beyond the traditional silkworm was also explored. A meeting with the Beekeepers' Association provided an opportunity to study silk-like protein materials associated with bees. Samples were collected for subsequent characterization, potentially opening a new avenue for comparative research on natural fibrillar materials.
**Margilan: Tradition Meets Engineering**
In Margilan, a city whose identity has been inextricably linked with silk for centuries, Professor Shimanovich visited the Institute of Natural Fibers. Here, silk processing capabilities at various stages are presented. The institute places particular emphasis on the scientific and engineering optimization of these processes, striving to improve individual production stages and make silk processing technologies more efficient and versatile.
A visit to the Yodgorlik silk factory offered a different perspective. Traditional methods of handcrafting silk fabrics, passed down from generation to generation, are still preserved there. The coexistence of traditional craftsmanship, modern production, and scientific research demonstrates the remarkable continuity and continuous evolution of Uzbekistan's relationship with silk.
Towards a Modern Scientific Silk Road
The visit highlighted the complementary strengths of the two countries. Research at the Weizmann Institute of Science is aimed at understanding how silk proteins are transformed from concentrated biological raw materials into exceptionally strong fibers, and how these principles can be used to create "programmable" silk fibers and new functional protein-based materials. Uzbekistan, in turn, offers a developed ecosystem covering all stages—from silkworm genetics and cocoon production to industrial processing, textile manufacturing, engineering, and performance testing.
Combining these capabilities could provide a unique path to transforming fundamental discoveries into scalable technologies, while simultaneously applying molecular-level scientific understanding to established silk production processes.
For centuries, the Silk Road has carried not only valuable materials between cultures, but also technologies, knowledge, and ideas. The connections established during this visit could represent a modern-day version of this exchange, linking Uzbekistan's centuries-old silk heritage and production expertise with Israeli science and innovation, laying the foundation for long-term collaboration in research, education, sustainable production, and advanced materials.
