The epidemiological situation regarding plague in Uzbekistan is stable — expert
The epidemiological situation related to the plague in Uzbekistan is stable, and there is currently no cause for concern. This was announced by Nurmat Atabekov, the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Sanitary-Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health.
In recent days, reports have spread on social networks about a registered case of plague, including its pneumonic form, in the Russian city of Irkutsk.
According to Atabekov, based on official data from Russia's Rospotrebnadzor, the connection of the case observed in Irkutsk to the plague has not yet been confirmed. Currently, investigations into this case are ongoing.
The expert emphasized that plague is an extremely dangerous infectious disease caused by bacteria. Natural foci of the disease exist in some regions of the world, and it is mainly found among small mammals. It can be transmitted to humans in most cases through infected animals or the bites of fleas on them.
A control system is in place in Uzbekistan to prevent the import and spread of plague and other extremely dangerous infectious diseases.
In particular, 53 sanitary control points are operating at state border crossing points — international airports, railway stations, and highways. Persons entering from abroad undergo medical screening through them.
Additionally, laboratories of regional sanitary-epidemiological services specialized in detecting extremely dangerous infectious diseases are provided with the necessary diagnostic tools, culture media, reagents, and chemical agents.
According to the Ministry of Health, the epidemiological situation related to the plague in the country is currently stable.
