Tesla held a closed demonstration of the driverless Cybercab vehicle in Austin. This is a two-seater electric car that the brand first showed in 2024.
The car is equipped with "gull-wing" style doors and eight cameras for autonomous driving. At the same time, it lacks traditional controls — a steering wheel, pedals, and side mirrors. Tesla has also abandoned radar and lidar, which are used by a number of competitors.
According to Tesla, the Cybercab is already being tested as part of the Robotaxi service. 45 such vehicles have been registered in Texas, but the company has not yet specified how many of them will be involved in commercial trips.
Currently, Tesla continues to develop robotaxis based on the Model Y. According to Robotaxi Tracker, the company operates a total of 256 autonomous vehicles without constant driver supervision across six cities. For comparison, Waymo operates nearly 4,000 vehicles in 14 cities.
Production sales of the Cybercab have not yet started. Earlier, company owner Elon Musk said the car's price could be around $30,000, but Tesla has not yet announced its market release date.
The Cybercab is equipped with a single permanent magnet electric motor producing 219 horsepower and a front gearbox. The battery capacity is 48 kWh. The taxi can travel up to 673 km on a single charge.
