Uber and Wayve launch first robotaxis in London

Uber and the British artificial intelligence company Wayve launched an autonomous passenger transport service in London on September 3. With this, London became the second city in Europe where Uber robotaxis operate. The first city was Zagreb.

In the initial phase of the service, there will be a licensed operator inside the vehicle to monitor it. The transition to fully driverless mode is planned to take place later. Passengers who order UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric services may be provided with a Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicle equipped with Wayve technology at no additional cost.

Initially, fewer than 20 vehicles will participate in the service. However, to launch a fully driverless service in London, a number of regulatory issues must be resolved, including delays in the licensing process by Transport for London.

According to Wayve, the company's AI-based AI Driver system learns through experience, similar to a human driver. This allows it to adapt to new roads, vehicles, weather conditions, and different cities.

Uber began its partnership with Wayve in 2024 and invested in the company. The parties plan to launch vehicles powered by Wayve technology in multiple markets in the future.
