Tashkent will host the official opening of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism

Uzbekistan and UN Tourism have agreed to jointly prepare the official opening of 2027 — the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism. The ceremony is planned to be held in November 2026 in Tashkent, as part of the "Tourism on the Silk Road" international tourism fair.

This became known following a meeting between the Chairman of the Tourism Committee of Uzbekistan, Abdulaziz Akkulov, and the UN Tourism Secretary-General, Sheikha Nasser Al Nowais, which took place in the UAE.

The parties discussed the development of strategic partnership, the promotion of sustainable tourism principles, increasing the competitiveness of tourist destinations, human capital development, and the expansion of international cooperation.

Following the negotiations, an agreement was signed to hold the official opening ceremony of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism. The document establishes the legal and organizational framework for preparing the event and coordinating joint actions.

The initiative to hold the ceremony in Tashkent was announced by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, on April 1, 2026, during a meeting with the leadership of UN Tourism.

The UN Tourism Secretary-General also reported that the development of the Safe Tourism Code, initiated by the head of state, is under her personal control. According to her, work on the document involving states and international experts is accelerating.
