Tashkent and Samarkand joined FAO's Green Cities Network
Tashkent and Samarkand have joined the UN FAO's Green Cities Network. This is a global community of cities working to create greener, healthier, more resilient, and inclusive urban environments. In the near future, the cities are expected to undergo an initial assessment.
Tashkent and Samarkand join FAO's Green Cities Network
Tashkent and Samarkand have become members of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Green Cities Network. The certificates were presented on August 20 by the secretariat of the "Green Cities" initiative located at the FAO headquarters in Rome.
This network is a global community of cities collaborating to create greener, healthier, more resilient, and inclusive urban environments. According to the FAO representation in Uzbekistan, it promotes sustainable urban development through an integrated approach to urban greening and strengthens cooperation among participating cities. This was also announced by the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.
The network promotes integrated solutions and strategies in three main areas: urban and peri-urban forestry; urban and peri-urban agriculture; and sustainable bioeconomy.
"Membership in the FAO Green Cities Network provides Tashkent and Samarkand with opportunities to receive technical assistance and capacity building, exchange knowledge and experience, participate in inter-city cooperation platforms, receive support in ensuring compliance with current global frameworks and environmental agendas, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and attract investments, as well as increase international recognition as leading cities promoting sustainable solutions in the field of urban development," the report says.
The "Green Cities" initiative was launched in 2020 and aims to significantly improve the health and well-being of populations, as well as the state of the environment, in 1,000 cities around the world by 2030.
Cooperation within the network is based on the "Green Cities Communiqué" and FAO's principles and criteria for green cities. The Communiqué was presented at the first International Conference on Green Cities held in 2025. It reflects a shared vision and collective commitments to develop a global movement for greener cities.
In the first phase of participation in the network, the secretariat of the "Green Cities" initiative will provide Tashkent and Samarkand with additional recommendations for conducting an initial self-assessment. This process will allow for the identification of priority areas for each city and the formulation of technical assistance based on their needs.
