Tashkent and Samarkand have joined the UN FAO Green Cities Network. This is a global community of cities working to create greener, healthier, more resilient, and inclusive urban environments. In the near future, the cities are to undergo an initial assessment.
Tashkent and Samarkand have joined the FAO Green Cities Network
Tashkent and Samarkand have become members of the Green Cities Network of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The certificates were presented on August 20 by the secretariat of the Green Cities Initiative at the FAO headquarters in Rome.
The network unites cities around the world that work together to create a greener, healthier, more resilient, and inclusive urban environment. It promotes sustainable urban development through integrated approaches to urban greening and strengthens interaction between participating cities, the FAO representation in Uzbekistan reported. This was also announced by the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.
The network promotes integrated solutions and strategies in three main areas: urban and peri-urban forestry; urban and peri-urban agriculture; and sustainable bioeconomy.
"Membership in the FAO Green Cities Network provides Tashkent and Samarkand with opportunities to receive technical support and capacity development, exchange knowledge and experience, participate in platforms for inter-municipal cooperation, receive assistance in ensuring compliance with applicable global frameworks and environmental agendas, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and attract investment, as well as increase international visibility as leading cities promoting sustainable urban development solutions," the statement noted.
The Green Cities Initiative was launched in 2020 and aims to achieve tangible improvements in the health and well-being of urban residents, as well as the state of the environment in 1,000 cities worldwide by 2030.
Cooperation within the network is based on the Green Cities Communiqué, as well as the FAO principles and criteria for green cities. The Communiqué was presented at the first International Green Cities Conference in 2025. It reflects a shared vision and collective commitments to developing a global movement for greener cities.
In the first phase of participation in the network, the secretariat of the Green Cities Initiative will provide Tashkent and Samarkand with additional recommendations for conducting an initial self-assessment. This process will help identify priority areas for each city and shape technical assistance tailored to its needs.
