Stolen $291,000 watch returned by mail in Japan

An Audemars Piguet watch stolen in Tokyo has been returned to the store by mail.

On Sunday morning, a postal package arrived at a store in the Nakano ward from Aichi Prefecture. Inside it were a wristwatch and a letter.

It was established that the identification number on the item matched the model number previously stolen from the store. The watch had no visible damage. The package also contained an apology note. Although the sender's name was indicated, police suspect it may be fictitious.

The theft occurred on Thursday evening. An unidentified man posing as a buyer tried on the watch worth $291,000. He spent 8 minutes in the store and then disappeared with the watch on his left wrist.

This is the second theft at this shopping center in the past few months. In August, two Chilean nationals stole four luxury wristwatches with a total value of $1.2 million. They were later arrested.
