Washington, D.C. Mayor Miriel Bowser has signed a special order declaring September 1 as Uzbekistan Independence Day in the city. This recognizes not only independence, but also the importance of Uzbek-Uzbek relations and the Uzbek community in the capital, the embassy in Washington said.

Washington Mayor Miriel Bowser signed a corresponding decree. Thus, after Seattle, the capital Washington also joined the list of cities celebrating Uzbekistan Independence Day. The mayor of Seattle had previously signed a document on celebrating September 1 as Uzbekistan Independence Day.
The signed declaration emphasized the importance of Independence Day and the fact that the United States was one of the first to recognize Uzbekistan's independence.
The document signed by the mayor states: "This year, the Republic celebrates the 35th anniversary of its independence. This date is celebrated annually on September 1, recognizing the rich cultural heritage, achievements, and influence of the Uzbek people in the international community."
According to Miriel Bowser, the diplomatic corps, led by Ambassador Furkat Sidiqov to the United States, has been working closely with Washington, contributing to the development of the city's educational and cultural diversity.
The mayor's declaration also noted: "As we celebrate the independence of Uzbekistan together with the Uzbek community around the world, we value friendship and common good goals. September 1, 2026, will be declared "Uzbek Independence Day" in Washington and the District of Columbia."
