Samarkand driver cited after near-miss with 8 pedestrians

A video has been spreading on social media that appears to show a black Chevrolet Malibu narrowly missing eight pedestrians as it sped through a crosswalk in Samarkand.

The incident was recorded by a surveillance camera in the area. The footage shows other vehicles stopped to allow pedestrians to cross, while the pedestrians were almost across the marked crosswalk when the black Malibu drove through without stopping. No one was injured.

According to the Samarkand City Police Department, the incident took place at about 10:20 p.m. on September 8 on Mirzo Ulugbek Street. Traffic safety officers identified the vehicle and its driver after an investigation.

Explaining the incident, the driver said he had been in a hurry and that his brakes had failed, causing him to veer from the first lane into the third.

The driver has been cited under Part One of Article 128-10 of the Administrative Liability Code (Road hooliganism). He is currently being questioned, and the case file is scheduled to be sent to the Samarkand City Court.

Under this article, those found guilty may be deprived of their driving privileges for one to two years and fined 25 times the base calculation unit, or 11 million soums.
