Russia plans to build four more floating nuclear power plants, following the Akademik Lomonosov, which has been providing electricity and heat to Pevek in Chukotka for several years. Rosatom believes this technology will enable energy supply to remote areas without the need for large-scale land-based infrastructure.

Azamat Khochuev, Director of the Northern Sea Route and Arctic Development Department at the state corporation, announced these plans while speaking at the "Arctic — Regions" forum. He emphasized that the operation of the Akademik Lomonosov has clearly demonstrated the high efficiency of floating nuclear power plants.
The floating nuclear power plant consists of a power unit equipped with two KLT-40S reactors, with a combined capacity of 70 MW. The Akademik Lomonosov is moored in Pevek, providing the city with electricity and heat. Unlike traditional nuclear power plants, this type of facility does not require the construction of a full-fledged nuclear power plant on land.
Four new floating power units are planned to supply electricity to the Baimsky Mining and Processing Plant. Their total capacity will be 424 MW. The first unit is scheduled to be commissioned in 2028, and the fourth in 2031.
As Khochuev noted, the floating format provides flexibility in choosing plant locations, helps reduce costs, and enables competitive tariffs. This is especially important for the Arctic region, given the complexities of logistics and the limited energy infrastructure in remote areas.
Rosatom also plans to actively promote this technology in international markets. The state corporation previously announced its intention to begin delivering floating nuclear power plants to international customers starting in 2030.
