Russia has built a launch base for jet-powered drones near the Ukrainian border
Russia has almost completed the construction of a major new base designed for launching jet-powered drones near the borders of Ukraine in just six weeks, Reuters reported after analyzing satellite imagery.
The base is being constructed in the Rostov region. The agency noted that on August 31, there was an empty field at the site, but now a massive complex equivalent in area to 126 football fields has been erected there.
Mike Monnik, founder of the private intelligence company DroneSec, believes the images indicate the base is designed to launch the newest "Geran-4" and "Geran-5" jet drones. Eight launch positions are located in the western part of the complex.
According to expert estimates, the base could allow the launch of approximately 100 jet drones per day. It is likely to become fully operational "within a matter of weeks."
Over the past few months, Russia has begun actively using jet-powered drones to strike Ukraine. Their main difference from conventional drones is their significantly higher flight range and speed. They are more difficult to shoot down than ordinary drones.
