Rubio says no one is winning Ukraine war, denies U.S. paused intelligence sharing
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio took questions from journalists about the war in Ukraine in Samarkand on Oct. 19. He said no one will come out on top in the war.
According to Rubio, President Donald Trump is prepared to take any step that could help bring the conflict to an end.
“The president has made clear that he wants the war to end. He wants the war between Ukraine and Russia to end. We will keep doing everything we can to help resolve the conflict... No one is winning the Ukraine war. People are dying every day. Things are being blown up and destroyed every day,” the secretary of state said.
Referring to Trump’s remarks, Rubio said 25,000 people are dying each month because of the war. He also addressed a claim by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that the United States had paused some intelligence sharing earlier this week. Zelenskiy made the comment earlier in an interview with NBC News.
“I don't know where he's getting these things from or why he's saying these things to the press. There's been no pause,” Rubio said.
Earlier reports said the United States had not warned Ukraine about a missile strike on Kyiv. Rubio said Ukraine’s early warning system had failed.
“A few nights ago, there was a software problem involving Ukraine's early warning system. EUCOM is looking at it. I can't comment on what happened last night,” the secretary of state said.
One journalist asked him: What evidence do you actually have that Putin is open to peace talks?
Rubio replied: What evidence? This is not a criminal case. This is about diplomacy. In diplomacy, you continue to try.
“Trump suspended the sanctions for 60 days because he wants to see if there's an opportunity for the talks that are going on right now,” Rubio concluded.
