Rosatom has begun rehabilitating a uranium legacy site in Tajikistan.

Rosatom State Corporation has begun work to restore the uranium facility, Workshop No. 3 of the Taboshar site, in Tajikistan. This work is being carried out by the Central Design and Technology Institute (JSC CPTI), part of Rosatom's Fuel Division. The facility is located in the village of Istiklol in the Sughd region.

These activities are being carried out under an intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Tajikistan aimed at cooperation in the rehabilitation of areas affected by uranium mining and ore extraction. The goal of the rehabilitation is to improve the environmental situation and create conditions for the safe future use of the area.

Previously, CPTI developed design and estimate documentation for the rehabilitation of two facilities in the Sughd region: Workshop No. 3 at the Taboshar site and a tailings storage facility in the village of Adarasman. These documents received positive approval from regulatory authorities.

Yakov Nikonov, CEO of JSC TSPT, noted that the commencement of work at the Taboshar site is an important milestone in the ongoing effort to eliminate uranium legacy in Tajikistan. He emphasized that the project utilizes modern engineering solutions and strictly adheres to safety requirements, which will improve the environment, facilitate regional development, and enhance the quality of life of the local population.

Rosatom is systematically rehabilitating Soviet-era mining waste dumps in neighboring countries, including Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. All sites are being brought into compliance with international standards and IAEA radiation safety regulations, leveraging advanced Russian practices.

Russian specialists already have successful experience rehabilitating uranium sites in Tajikistan. In 2023, TSPT completed a project ahead of schedule to reclaim several sites at the Taboshar site, including a low-grade uranium ore processing plant waste dump and four tailings ponds. Under the recently concluded Interstate Target Program (ITP), tailings dams near the villages of Min-Kush and Kadji-Sai in Kyrgyzstan were reclaimed.

Following the completion of the ITP, cooperation continues under new intergovernmental agreements. In Kyrgyzstan, work is underway at the Too-Moyun, Kyzyl-Zhar, and Kadji-Sai tailings dams, scheduled for completion by 2030. In Tajikistan, preparations are underway for the rehabilitation of the Adrasman tailings dam.
