Reports circulated that Cannavaro might leave, UFA denied
The Uzbekistan Football Association has denied reports circulating about the potential resignation of Fabio Cannavaro, the head coach of the Uzbekistan national football team.
"In recent hours, reports have been circulating in some foreign sources that the head coach of the Uzbekistan national team, Fabio Cannavaro, may leave his post following the change in the dates of the 2027 Asian Cup.
The Uzbekistan Football Association announces that these reports do not correspond to reality.
We ask the mass media and football fans not to trust unconfirmed information and to rely on official news," the statement reads.
This denial was issued in response to news spread by famous insider Fabrizio Romano. The journalist had previously reported on his pages that Fabio Cannavaro would leave the management of the Uzbekistan national team due to the Asian Cup being postponed by a year.
For reference, the UFA signed a 2+3 format contract with Fabio Cannavaro in the autumn of 2025. That is, depending on the results at the Asian Cup, the agreement was expected to be extended for another three years.
As a reminder, the Asian Cup tournament hosted by Saudi Arabia has been delayed by almost a year. According to the plan, the tournament was supposed to be held from January 7 to February 5, 2027. However, by decision of the AFC, the tournament will begin on December 23, 2027, with the final match scheduled for January 21, 2028. The organization explained this decision by logistics and travel difficulties in the region.
