Police arrest teenager after shooting that injured 12, including children, in Florida

Police have detained a teenager in connection with a Saturday shooting in Florida that left 12 people injured.

The shooting happened at 20:00 local time (01:00 Sunday GMT), near an American football stadium in Tallahassee, where a university game had recently been held.

Local police said 11 people were wounded by gunfire, while another injured their ankle while running from the scene. Six of those hurt were children.

Anthony Rivers III, 15, has been charged with 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent.

Police said the shooting came after an altercation between people who knew one another, and that further arrests were possible.

In a statement, they said none of the victims appeared to have been the intended targets.

"What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families," Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said.

"We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and getting answers for every family impacted by this tragedy."

On Sunday, police said six people were in hospital, including one person in critical condition. Five others had been discharged.

Revell said at a Sunday press conference that officers had to carry victims in their arms to reach emergency responders because of the crowds from the football game.
