Five injured, one critically, in shooting at Virginia State University
Multiple suspects were involved in the incident in the early hours of Saturday, the university said.
A shooting at Virginia State University left five individuals wounded, with one in critical condition, according to a statement from the university. The incident, which reportedly involved multiple suspects, prompted officers to respond to the scene outside a residence hall at approximately 1:28 AM local time (5:28 AM GMT) on Saturday.
All five victims, who sustained gunshot wounds, were transported to nearby hospitals. Four of them were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. As of yet, there has been no confirmation of any arrests, and the BBC has reached out to local police for further details.
While a temporary campus lockdown has been lifted, the university confirmed that a "significant" law enforcement presence remains on site. The investigation is being spearheaded by Chesterfield County Police, with assistance from other local law enforcement agencies and campus police.
Virginia State University, located just over 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, enrolls approximately 5,000 students. It is recognized as one of the nation's historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), institutions originally established to offer higher education opportunities to African Americans who were historically denied access to most other colleges. The university's website indicates that classes for the new term are scheduled to commence on Monday.
