Peruvian authorities announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Iran. Lima accused Tehran of exacerbating Middle East conflicts, obstructing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and hindering the work of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.

According to a statement from the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lima expressed concern about the deteriorating democratic situation in Iran. Specifically, she cited the suppression of peaceful demonstrations, restrictions on freedom of speech, discrimination against women and girls, and the persecution of political opponents. Peruvian authorities also cited restrictions and disruptions to international trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which have been observed since March 2026. According to Lima, this violates the principle of freedom of navigation and negatively impacts the safety of maritime transport, energy prices, and the stability of global supply chains.

Peru also accused Iran of inciting violence and escalating conflicts in the Middle East, as well as obstructing the work of the IAEA. According to Iran International, the UN previously stated that it was unable to determine the status of one of Iran's uranium enrichment facilities due to a lack of access for inspectors.

The severance of diplomatic relations does not affect consular ties. Peru plans to maintain them to protect its citizens and interests in Iran. The decision was communicated to the Iranian side through the Iranian Embassy in Ecuador, which also represents Tehran's interests in Peru.

Earlier, the United Arab Emirates suspended trade and financial transactions with Iran indefinitely following reports of the discovery of two ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory. Tehran denied the accusations, calling them baseless.
