Peru cuts diplomatic ties with Iran

Peru has severed diplomatic ties with Iran.

The Latin American country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Peruvian government has decided to sever diplomatic ties with the country, condemning Iran's policies, RIA Novosti reported.

The statement said: "The government of the Republic of Peru, based on its historical commitment to peace, respect for international law and the defense of democracy, has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran."

The Foreign Ministry noted that Peru is deeply concerned about the strict restrictions imposed by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Peruvian officials, these restrictions have had a negative impact on international trade.

Peru also condemned Iran's obstruction of the activities of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). It was noted that the agency's inspectors have been repeatedly denied access to nuclear facilities.

Despite the severance of diplomatic relations, the Latin American country plans to continue providing consular services to its citizens in Iran. Earlier, it was reported that Nicaragua unexpectedly severed diplomatic relations with Italy. This was due to a dispute over the extradition of a man involved in the assassination of a former Italian prime minister.
