The Bakiyeves will go to prison as soon as they cross the border of Kyrgyzstan — President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov

No statute of limitations
The Bakiyevs will find themselves in prison immediately upon crossing the border of Kyrgyzstan. This was stated by the head of the republic, Sadyr Japarov, commenting on rumors that Maxim, the younger son of former Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, had visited the country. The statement was made in an interview with the super.kg portal.
"The court sentenced Zhanysh and Maxim Bakiyev to life imprisonment. No one can change the sentences," Japarov said. He also added that if the brother and son of former Kyrgyz President Bakiyev come to the country, they will be sent to prison immediately.
Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the former head of the republic, left the country after the 2010 revolution and settled in Minsk. In his homeland, he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment, accused of crimes against the people. In March 2023, another 10 years were added to his sentence for illegal deals regarding the development of the Kumtor deposit. Taking into account all guilty verdicts, the total term of punishment amounted to 30 years of imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony. Life imprisonment was not applied due to Bakiyev's age: at the time of sentencing, he was over 60 years old.
In addition to the ex-president, his relatives were also held accountable for various crimes: his brother Zhanysh received a life sentence, his eldest son Marat received 27 years in prison, and his younger son Maxim was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Seven years after his flight, Kurmanbek Bakiyev stated in a documentary on the Kazakh TV channel "Khabar" that the day would come when he would return to his homeland.
