Messi received the Princess of Asturias Award in Spain
Lionel Messi was awarded the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award in the sports category. The award was presented to him by Princess Leonor of Spain. The ceremony took place at the Campoamor Theatre in the city of Oviedo, attended by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
Messi became the first footballer to win this award, which was established in 1987, individually rather than as part of a team. In addition, he is the first Argentine among the laureates.
The jury announced the decision on June 3. Messi was chosen from among 27 candidates nominated from 12 countries. The jury's verdict specifically highlighted his talent, brilliant career, and charitable work—his assistance in providing children with access to education and healthcare. The jury also noted his humility and commitment to team play. The winner receives 50,000 euros and a sculpture by Joan Miró.
The award also holds personal significance for the footballer. According to him, his father Jorge, who passed away on August 8, had greatly anticipated this award and urged him to go to Spain.
The conferring of the award sparked controversy. Following the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, a section of Spanish fans remained dissatisfied with the actions of the Argentines. Dozens of petitions demanding that Messi be deprived of the award appeared on the Change.org platform. The foundation did not publicly respond to them.
