Macron said he misses Angela Merkel
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he misses former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Saying that communication with current European Union leaders feels boring to him, he confessed that he also greatly misses conversations with former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
These statements and personal correspondence between the journalist and Macron took place in 2024.
“I am bored. Everything is gloomy and devoid of creative energy. I miss Mario Draghi and Angela Merkel very much,” he told the journalist.
The French leader added that sometimes all of this weighs heavily on him, but he is not giving in to depression.
Notably, in November 2024, Merkel also said after leaving office that she missed her meetings with Macron. At that time, she highly praised the French leader's culture, intelligence, and creative approach to finding solutions.
Angela Merkel served as Chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union from 2000 to 2018, and as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021.
Mario Draghi served as President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019, and as Prime Minister of Italy from 2021 to 2022.
Macron also touched upon the political situation in France, the 2024 snap parliamentary elections, and the future prospects of the "National Rally" party. He stated that despite the calls of his opponents, he does not intend to resign.
At the same time, the president spoke about his plans after his term of office expires in 2027. He said he is considering starting his own business outside France, but does not want to work for anyone as an employee.
And in September 2026, Macron noted the possibility of returning to the presidency again after leaving office.
“Let's be clear: according to our constitution, a citizen has the right to be elected for two consecutive terms. My term ends in May next year, and the French people will elect someone else. But I exclude nothing. Returning is a very unusual situation, but time will tell,” Macron said at the time in an interview with the American magazine Variety.
The French president added that “life is full of creativity — sometimes even more than cinema.”
