Jewel Howard-Taylor, who served as Liberia's vice president from 2018 to 2024, has been arrested as part of an international drug trafficking investigation.
Howard-Taylor was arrested on August 19 as she was leaving for the international airport in the country's capital, Monrovia. She is charged with drug trafficking.
In July of this year, 4 tons of cocaine worth $317 million, which was destined for Europe, were seized in Liberia.
The country's government has said that there will be no mercy for those arrested in this case.
Howard-Taylor is the ex-wife of Charles Taylor, who was president of Liberia from 1997 to 2003. Charles Taylor is currently serving a 50-year sentence in a British prison for war crimes.
