Latvia restricts imports of a number of goods produced in Russia and Belarus

Latvia has restricted the import of certain products from Russia and Belarus.

Starting from September 1, Latvia has introduced a ban on the import of certain types of goods manufactured in Russia and Belarus. These restrictions apply not only to direct imports, but also to shipments from third countries.

The list of prohibited products includes books, newspapers and other printed publications. Clothing, footwear, hats, toys, games and sports equipment have also been banned.

According to Delfi, these restrictions introduced by Latvia do not apply to other countries of the European Union. For example, goods manufactured in Russia or Belarus are allowed to be imported into Latvia from Lithuania. In addition, the transit of products from these two countries through Latvia to other countries of the European Union is also allowed.

The Latvian Saeima (parliament) adopted the relevant amendments at the end of July. The government says the ban is aimed at protecting the country's security interests. It also aims to reduce the ability of Russia and Belarus to profit from exports and to limit the flow of Russian propaganda materials into Latvia.

It was previously reported that Latvia had requested €7 billion from the European Union to sever ties with Russia. The money would be used to cover the country's rising defense spending and the consequences of cutting economic ties with Moscow.
