Kazakhstan introduces the QazETA system: what will change for citizens of Uzbekistan

The gradual implementation of the QazETA electronic travel authorization system is beginning in Kazakhstan. The innovation will affect foreign citizens, including citizens of Uzbekistan, who use the visa-free regime.

Kazakhstan Launches QazETA System: What Will Change for Citizens of Uzbekistan

Kazakhstan is starting the phased implementation of the QazETA electronic pre-entry authorization system. This innovation will affect foreign citizens, including citizens of Uzbekistan, who benefit from a visa-free regime.

During the transition period, obtaining authorization will be advisory in nature, after which the system is expected to switch to a mandatory mode in accordance with the approved schedule.

Starting November 1, 2026, Kazakhstan will begin the phased implementation of the QazETA system—an electronic mechanism for pre-entry authorization for foreign citizens. The new system is designed to digitize state border crossing procedures and pre-process information about arriving travelers.

For citizens of Uzbekistan who regularly travel to Kazakhstan for tourist, business, or private purposes, it is important to take into account the implementation timeline and the procedure for issuing electronic authorization.

Where Will QazETA Come into Effect?

According to published information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, from November 1, 2026, the system will be implemented at selected checkpoints, including the Aktau International Airport and the "Urlyutobe", "Aukhatty", "Atameken", and "Nurly Zhol" road checkpoints.

Later, the geography of the system's application will be expanded.

From January 1, 2027, it is planned to extend it to the international airports of Astana and Almaty, and from March 1, 2027—to the remaining checkpoints across the state border.

Thus, the procedure for applying QazETA will depend on the date of the trip and the chosen route.

Will Authorization Be Mandatory for Citizens of Uzbekistan?

Citizens of Uzbekistan enjoy a visa-free regime when traveling to Kazakhstan. However, the absence of the need to obtain a visa does not mean automatic exemption from the requirements of the electronic pre-entry authorization system.

During the transitional stage, which, according to published information, will last until June 30, 2027, obtaining a QazETA is recommended, but the lack of authorization itself should not serve as a basis for refusal of entry.

From July 1, 2027, a transition to the mandatory use of the system is expected in accordance with the announced schedule.

At the same time, it is recommended to check the current requirements of Kazakh authorities before traveling, as the procedure for implementing digital processes may be updated.

How to Apply for QazETA?

Electronic tools of the system are provided for submitting an application.

Foreign citizens are recommended to take the following steps: access the official QazETA resource or use the official mobile application; review the terms for issuing an electronic authorization; specify details of a valid foreign passport and the planned trip; fill in the required fields and submit the application; wait for the result of the review and save the confirmation of the authorization.

According to published clarifications, applications should be submitted at least 72 hours before the intended trip. Before applying, it is necessary to check current deadlines, conditions, and service availability on the official resource of the system.

Official resource: QazETA.

An electronic authorization does not replace a passport and does not guarantee automatic border crossing. The final decision on the admission of a foreign citizen is made in accordance with established procedures by the authorized bodies of Kazakhstan.

Will the Visa-Free Regime Change?

The introduction of QazETA in itself does not mean the cancellation of the visa-free regime between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. It concerns an additional digital procedure that must be applied in accordance with the established rules.

Citizens of Uzbekistan planning a trip should consider not only the requirements of QazETA, but also the current rules of stay in Kazakhstan.

As a general rule, citizens of Uzbekistan can stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 calendar days per entry, provided that the total period of stay does not exceed 90 calendar days within each 180-day period, unless special rules apply to a specific situation.

Obtaining a QazETA does not give the right to stay beyond the established period and does not cancel other migration requirements.

What Do Travelers Need to Consider?

The implementation of QazETA signifies further digitization of entry procedures to Kazakhstan. For travelers, this implies the need to familiarize themselves in advance with the requirements of the host country, especially when traveling through checkpoints where the system is being introduced first.

Citizens of Uzbekistan planning trips to Kazakhstan in late 2026 and in 2027 are advised to check current rules, application deadlines, and the list of documents well in advance.

Particular attention should be paid to the accuracy of passport data, compliance with processing deadlines, and consistency between the details in the application and the documents presented when crossing the border.

As the use of QazETA expands, electronic authorization may become a standard element of trip preparation for citizens of countries enjoying a visa-free regime with Kazakhstan.
