Kazakh scientists have invented a new type of potato

A new type of potato has been created in Kazakhstan

A new local potato variety named "Aytkhozhin" has been cultivated in Kazakhstan.

This variety is distinguished by its high yield and resistance to a number of diseases. It was jointly developed by specialists from the Kazakh Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing and the M.A. Aitkhozhin Institute of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

The researchers created the variety taking into account its adaptation to the soil and climatic conditions of Kazakhstan, high yield, and disease resistance. During the breeding process, scientists used modern biotechnological and molecular-genetic technologies alongside traditional methods. The project is aimed at developing potato, vegetable, and melon growing.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, Azat Sultanov, stated that despite the anomalous heat and unstable weather, there would be no shortage of potatoes and other vegetables in the country. In 2025, a water-saving rice variety named "Syr suluy" was created in the country. It ripens faster and therefore requires less water.

For reference, Kazakhstan is the country that supplies the most potatoes to Uzbekistan. While a total of 421,918 tons of potatoes were exported from 11 countries within half a year, 337.9 tons of this fell to the share of Kazakhstan.
