New rice varieties resistant to drought and stress are being developed in the Khorezm region.

As reported by Podrobno.uz news agency from Tashkent, researchers at the Khorezm branch of the Rice Research Institute are developing rice varieties capable of producing significant yields even under moisture stress and other adverse conditions. Experts are currently crossbreeding promising genotypes.

The development of new varieties is being carried out taking into account the specific soil cover and climatic conditions of Khorezm. The researchers' main goal is to produce rice that will thrive in local conditions, consume less water, and maintain high productivity under drought and other stressful conditions.

One of the most important stages of breeding—plant crossbreeding—is currently underway on the branch's experimental plots. The process utilizes promising genotypes possessing desirable characteristics, such as high yield, excellent grain quality, optimal ripening time, and resistance to water stress and other adverse conditions.

Specialists are currently crossbreeding ten different combinations. The resulting hybrids will be sequentially studied, and plants with the most valuable traits will be selected.

Scientists will also monitor the growth and development of new generations of rice, assessing their yield and ability to withstand stressful conditions.

This work is particularly relevant in the context of climate change and the increasing need for rational water management.

It was previously reported that scientists from Tashkent State Agrarian University (TSAU) have developed a new variety of mandarin orange called Mediana. This variety is well adapted to local soil and climate conditions, minimizing the use of chemicals during cultivation, thereby ensuring environmental friendliness.
