Uzbekistan national futsal team head coach José María Méndez has left his post
Spanish specialist José María Méndez resigned from his position as head coach of the Uzbekistan national futsal team of his own accord "due to serious health problems."
According to the sports organization, Méndez had been undergoing medical examinations since the end of August due to heart failure. He was first examined in Tashkent and then sent to Madrid for more in-depth checks.
Spanish doctors advised the coach to temporarily suspend his professional activities and undergo a course of serious treatment.
For this reason, Méndez appealed to the federation management with a request to resign. After reviewing the request and taking into account his health condition, the management granted this request.
"Even if I am far away, I will follow the further activities of the national team and cheer for it. I believe that you will definitely win a ticket to the World Cup. If the need arises, I want to inform you that I am always ready to help and advise the future coaching staff," he wrote.
The federation wished the specialist a successful treatment process, a speedy recovery, and a full restoration of his health.
In September, the federation commented on Méndez's absence from the delegation during the team's European tour.
The organization had purchased an airline ticket to Budapest for him in advance. According to the plan, the Spanish specialist was supposed to lead the team in friendly matches against the national teams of Hungary and the Netherlands, but at that time he was undergoing treatment in Madrid.
José María Méndez was appointed head coach of the Uzbekistan national futsal team in March this year.
Prior to this, he had managed the Uzbekistan national team twice — first in 2011–2012, and then in 2014–2017. At that time, he left the team due to the expiration of his contract.
Under Méndez's leadership, the national team won silver medals at the 2016 Asian Championship.
