Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama dies aged 97
The artist died earlier in August after a life "devoted entirely to artistic creation", her company said.
Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese avant-garde artist renowned for her sculptures and installations, has passed away at the age of 97, her company announced.
A statement confirmed, "It is with profound sorrow that the passing of Yayoi Kusama at a hospital in Tokyo on August 14, 2026, at the age of 97."
The statement further elaborated on her legacy: "Throughout an extraordinary lifetime devoted entirely to artistic creation, Kusama pursued an internationally acclaimed career as a pioneering avant-garde artist whose creative practice encompassed visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry."
Kusama, recognizable by her vibrant red wig and distinctive polka-dot outfits, had resided voluntarily in a psychiatric hospital for many decades.
