Gardaí, the Irish police, are investigating after the bodies of a woman in her 40s and a man in his 30s were found at a house in Bray, County Wicklow.

The pair were discovered at the property in Cois Cairn, on Old Connaught Avenue, shortly after 08:00 local time on Wednesday.

According to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, they have been identified locally as couple Bridgid 'Biddy' O'Brien and James McGinn.

In a statement, gardaí said the results of post-mortem examinations would help determine the direction of the investigation.

The examinations are due to be carried out by the state pathologist during Wednesday and Thursday.

A cordon was established in the housing estate on Wednesday morning, and a large blue forensic tent was put up at the scene.

A senior officer has been assigned to oversee the investigation from an incident room at Dún Laoghaire Garda Station, with assistance from the Serious Crime Unit.

Family liaison officers are providing support to relatives of the deceased.

Councillor Malachaí Duddy, Cathaoirleach (Chair) of Bray Municipal District, said the entire community had been shocked by the deaths.

"It's a very sad day and it's a tragedy," he told BBC News NI.

"I extend my condolences to the family."

Duddy also said Bray is known for its strong sense of community and that he had no doubt local people would come together in difficult times.

He called on the public to assist gardaí and to get in touch if they have any information about the deaths.
