Uzbekistan intends to expand the list of agencies responsible for crime prevention

A new version of the law on crime prevention is being prepared in Uzbekistan. In particular, it is proposed to increase the number of state bodies involved in this work, add new areas of prevention, and establish measures to protect victims and witnesses.

According to the presidential press service, 14 state bodies are currently engaged in crime prevention; however, in a number of cases, their functions overlap. Despite this, it was proposed at the presentation to involve seven more entities in this work.

Mirziyoyev instructed to justify the need to expand their number and to define the specific tasks, powers, and responsibilities of each participant. It is also proposed to legally establish the procedure for coordinating the agencies' work and evaluating its effectiveness.

The new version of the law aims to separately specify measures for the prevention of drug-related crimes, cybercrime, organized crime, the shadow economy, and corruption.

Another set of proposals concerns the protection of victims and witnesses. If their life, health, or property is threatened, the law should provide for security and social protection measures. In addition, there are plans to establish the possibility of rewarding citizens who assist in the fight against crime.

It is also proposed to introduce legal grounds for mandatory preventive directives. They should help eliminate the causes and conditions that contribute to the commission of offenses.

The current Law "On Crime Prevention" was adopted in 2014. Since then, more than 20 amendments and additions have been made to it. Following the presentation, responsible officials were instructed to revise the draft of the new version, taking into account the comments made.

Earlier, it was reported that the president signed a decree on introducing a new system for assessing the crime situation.
