A person who spat on the national flag has been arrested in Turkey

In the Turkish resort of Alanya, a 58-year-old British citizen who spat on the national flag has been detained.

According to reports, the 58-year-old tourist got into an argument with hotel staff, after which he spat on the flag hanging in the lobby. The staff reported his actions to the police. Following this, the British man was detained and taken to the Alanya court. There, the foreigner was arrested on charges of showing disrespect to a state symbol.

Following the court's decision, the British citizen was taken to a local prison outside the city. According to Article 300 of the Turkish Penal Code, publicly disrespecting the national flag can lead to up to three years of imprisonment.

For reference, in August 2025, a tourist from Bosnia and Herzegovina performed a pole dance on a pole where the Turkish flag was installed in Cappadocia and posted a video of the incident on social media. Following this, the prosecutor's office opened a criminal case against her.
