New trolleybuses in Khorezm to be put into service from October 27
New Chinese Yutong battery-electric trolleybuses, which were presented to the President of Uzbekistan in mid-August, are scheduled to begin operating on the route between Urgench and Khiva starting October 27. This was announced by the Transport Department of the Khorezm region.
Just recently, a new administrative building and a renovated depot of the "Khorezm Trolleybus Park" state enterprise were commissioned in Urgench. A depot is also being built in Khiva.
According to the report, future drivers have undergone special training and received their licenses.
Khorezm region is the only region in Uzbekistan where the trolleybus system has been preserved. It is also one of only two intercity trolleybus systems in the world. Its one-way length is 35.6 km (the second route operates between Simferopol and Yalta — 84 km).
The route was opened in 1998. Initially, the trolleybuses ran from Urgench Airport to Khiva, but later the route was shortened to the Urgench Central Market. Currently, Skoda trolleybuses purchased in 2013 are in use. There are nine trolleybuses in total, eight of which operate regularly.
10 new trolleybuses capable of autonomous operation for up to 100 kilometers will allow the route to be extended back to the airport.
