Powerful tornado rips off airport roof in Brazil, floods city (video)

A tornado that hit the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina caused significant damage to the local airport. CNN reported on this.

At Chapecó Airport, the powerful storm blew off part of the roofs of buildings in the area of the hangars and the main terminal. The administration has suspended the airport's operations indefinitely. Experts are currently conducting a full inspection of the infrastructure. Plans are in place to restore airport operations as quickly as possible.

Passengers were advised not to come to the airport and to contact the airlines directly for updated information regarding their flights. Videos from the scene have spread on social media.

Due to the severe weather, the entire state was declared an extremely high-risk zone. As a result of the tornado, building roofs were damaged and areas were flooded. The Santa Catarina government canceled classes in all public schools on November 4 and 5. The state administration urged residents to stay home for their own safety.

The natural disaster also led to serious consequences in other municipalities. In the city of Rio do Sul, firefighters rescued 30 people, including children and adults, who were stranded in a school. Because the entrances to the building were flooded, rescuers were forced to use inflatable boats and ropes.

In the municipality of Pouso Redondo, the storm blew the roofs off 13 houses. Firefighters removed trees that had fallen onto roads and garages. Special protective tarpaulins are being distributed to affected residents to temporarily cover the damaged buildings.
