Pezeshkian: "If the US returns to the June agreement, Iran will also fulfill its obligations"

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that if the United States fulfills its obligations under the interim agreement signed in June, Tehran is ready to do the same. Reuters reported this from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek.

Pezeshkian said that "if the US returns to its obligations under the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately respond."

The statement came after the first direct exchange of blows between the US and Iran since late July. Pezeshkian said that war would not serve the interests of either side and that Tehran was still ready to resolve the conflict with Washington through negotiations.

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran will "retaliate" after its attacks on American bases in Jordan. At the same time, he stressed that the renewed strikes do not mean a return to full-scale war.

The US and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. Targets in Tehran, Isfahan and other areas were hit, and Iran responded with missiles and drones at Israeli and US military bases in the Middle East.

In June, the parties reached a temporary agreement to end the war. On June 17, the terms of the memorandum expected to be signed between the US and Iran were made public. On June 21, the parties agreed to reduce the level of enrichment of Iran's uranium reserves. The agreement also provided for the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.

However, the agreement did not work stably. Tehran accused Washington of failing to lift the blockade of ports and other obligations, while the United States accused Iran of failing to restore free shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In mid-August, Washington tried to involve Austria and Greece in talks with Tehran.

On August 31, the United States struck targets on the Iranian island of Larak. Tehran, in turn, targeted two military bases in Jordan used by the United States. This was the first direct exchange of strikes between the two countries since late July.
