Hungary asked the US for exemption from sanctions

Hungary has requested an exemption from the US from potential sanctions for continuing to purchase Russian oil. Budapest wishes to maintain energy ties with Moscow during the process of reducing its dependence on Russian resources.

This request was made after Congress granted Trump new powers to impose tariffs on buyers of Russian oil products.

The government of Prime Minister Peter Magyar has promised to reduce dependence on Russian energy and diversify import sources. However, Hungary still remains significantly dependent on Moscow.

"We asked for assistance for this transition period. That is, we requested an exemption from American sanctions aimed at purchasing Russian energy resources," said Marton Hajdu, Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, after a meeting with US lawmakers.

Officials stated that their actions do not align with diplomatic status. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that this would not go unanswered and that the response would be painful for Hungary.
