High activity of a plague focus has been recorded on the border between Russia and Mongolia

High activity of a plague focus has been recorded on the border between Russia and Mongolia. Specialists drew these conclusions based on the results of laboratory studies conducted in 2026, Rospotrebnadzor reports. This refers to the Sailyugemsky transboundary focus, which covers an area of about 29,000 square kilometers. Almost 60% of this territory is located in Mongolia.
The state of the zone is regularly monitored by Russian anti-plague institutions in cooperation with the National Center for Zoonotic Diseases of Mongolia. Planned monitoring and vaccination of the population based on epidemiological indications continue on the territory of the Russian Federation, which allows for maintaining a stable sanitary and epidemiological situation.
The activation of the focus near the borders is a systemic process of recent years. Back in 2023, at the 25th international conference "Problems of Zoonotic Infections," representatives of the relevant Mongolian center reported the identification of 137 natural plague foci in 17 aimags of the country. The zones closest to Russia are located in the northwestern aimag of Uvs, which borders Tuva. According to joint studies by epidemiologists from the two countries, an increase in the activity of foci in this area was also recorded in 2022.
